DNA separated from one cell, when introduced into another cell is able to bestow some of the properties of former to the latter this change is called as ‘Transformation’.

The experimental evidences which led to the discovery of the above phenomenon were ‘Griffith Experiment’. In this experiment:

1. Griffith took two strains of ‘streptococcus pneumoniae’. One strain was smooth or ‘S’ strain and the other was rough strain or ‘R’ strain bacteria.

2. Griffith took two mice. He infected one of the mice with S-strain bacteria and the other mice with ‘R’ strain bacteria.

3. Mice infected with ‘S’ strain died because the ‘S’ strain bacteria formed a polysaccharide coat over them, which protected the bacteria from the host’s immune system hence, making it virulent.

4. Whereas mice infected with ‘R’ strain survived because ‘R’ strain bacteria did not form a polysaccharide coat over them, which made the bacteria vulnerable from the host’s immune system hence, making it non- virulent.

5. After this, Griffith killed the ‘S’ strain bacteria under high temperatures and injected them into the mice. The mice did not die of the disease.

6. After this, Griffith mixed the live ‘R’ strain bacteria with the heat killed ‘S’ strain bacteria and injected it into the mice. The mice died of the disease

7. This experiment proved that the heat killed ‘S’ strain bacteria transformed the live ‘R’ strain bacteria into virulent bacteria, showing that a transforming principle transformed the ‘R’ strain bacteria into smooth or ‘S’ strain bacteria.

8. Now, it has been concluded that the ‘transforming principle’ was DNA of the heat killed ‘S’ strain bacteria that got transferred to the ‘R’ strain bacteria and made it virulent.

above answer is correct..This process is known as transformation. Griffith was the scientist for that discovery.
